One Word Description: Relaxing
Pros: Decent graphics, good music, relaxed gameplay, farming, crafting, fishing, cooking, building, sailing not annoying, storyline, many side quests, easter eggs, quick jumps available
Cons: Back forth fetch quests, no vehicle to make main town island easier to navigate, hunger and power meter, anticlimactic ending, buggy gameplay, some quests unclear, unsatisfactory ending
Game Review – The game starts off with young Koa running around the island and Yaya Haku being the stern but loving grandma. The tutorial turns out to be a flashback and all of the sudden, Koa is older, the island is in disrepair, and the only reminder that Haku existed is a little shrine decorated with shells near the mysterious stone gate. She’s been barely surviving on her own and continues to subsist off oranges, blackberries, and fish until one day a strange creature she names Napopo happens by. With sudden inspiration, Koa fixes the island, makes new tools, and eventually repairs the boat to explore Mara!
First stop is Qalis, the main city of Mara, which is the main island in the game. There Koa meets with many new characters and thus starts the game. Summer in Mara is a quest-centric game. Finishing tasks for the inhabitants of the sea unlocks new quests, items, tools, characters, and most importantly: the map. There is a good rhythm to the flow, offering many choices to the player. The time element governing night and day has no bearing upon things aside from shop times and forcing Koa to rest. The later it becomes, the faster the stamina depletes, and no amount food will fully sustain her until she either sleeps at her house, at the inn of Qalis, on the boat or in a sleeping bag/tent.
As a general rule, when new things are available to be built, build it! Oftentimes, the act of building on Koa’s island will unlock new recipes allowing the player a sigh of relief and the fun of decorating the island. Cut down, burn, replant trees as you like. The game imposes limits on number of trees, but building wells increases that amount. Collecting animals who then produce items when fed, encourages farming of crops. Initially, the one-time-use items and limited materials can be anxiety-inducing, but most items can be bought if you have enough money. However, the game is extremely generous with random free items so long as the player spends time sailing and speaking to mail crabs. Speaking of money, it’s easy to sell items for cash, AND the nice thing is that aside from a 99 item cap, there is no inventory limit.
The main story quest can be…frustrating. There’s a lot of back and forth and fetching this and that, and dealing with irritating, stubborn old people. While that is easily forgiven of side quests, main story quests are better off being more straight forward in my opinion. Thankfully, I spent so much time gathering items that most quests were quickly and easily dealt with. The story is mostly told through character dialogue, but sometimes there are animated sequences. Trying to protect Mara from enterprising aliens was surprisingly making me angry for the inhabitants, and I was excitedly looking forward to the big ending as the events were reaching a climax when–
–an error occurred, and I got back into the game only to have missed it all. It had thrown me directly into post-game conditions. I had to go digging around on YouTube for the cutscene only to find that I missed almost nothing. The animated scene was short, a little confusing, and not all that satisfying.
Hmm. I decided that I would actually finish the rest of the quests out and spent several more hours digging up chests (apparently, I never knew about the shovel the entire game!) and making money. I kept hitting more and more game bugs as it went on until I thought I hit the biggest bug of all: an unfinishable quest! However, as is turns out, it’s not a bug. You literally cannot finish all of the quests because according to the developers it symbolizes the idea that quests never end in Mara :). Buh. While I understand where they’re coming from, that doesn’t sit well with me… doesn’t give me closure. Ugh. I wish they’d come up with a different way.
So, basically, I quietly finished the game and…I guess…that’s it…?
Gripes
Some things are unclear. Like some of the quests sent me to the search engines because I simply could not figure out where to get some things. I kind of wish they’d mentioned somewhere that building items on the island would help unlock new recipes. If they did, I definitely missed it as did many other players according to the forums.
Running around on Qalis was hella annoying!!! It’s nice that the island is well laid out, but geez, running literally back and forth to opposite ends of the place over and over again was getting seriously tiring. Plus, I think the ZR button on my Switch is permanently affected by constant depression. I wish more developers allowed constant running toggles. Rune Factory 5 did a great job of that.
A horse, or roller skates, or a bike would have helped tremendously on Qalis
BUGS. GLITCHES. From random teleportation, to getting stuck on things, to menu limitations. Admittedly, it wasn’t game-breaking and only one significant glitch (though I think that might be Switch and not software?) that prevented me from seeing the end cutscene.
It would have been nice to have more access to workshops/kitchen/tool making outside of the home island. The constant need to go back because I needed to make ONE item was irritating. Maybe make it a boat upgrade?
There are 3 types of trees that need to be planted on higher elevation. That’s kind of cool to have that consideration, except that the only place on the island to grow the 3 fruits was so super tiny! Why!?
I really wish there was more post-game content. Something like restoring the old Navy Academy would have been neat or establishing a new Navy altogether. Perhaps as a reward for completing all of the quests, it unlocks that! Or maybe completing the colossus. All in all, too short.
Some of the islands seemed useless. Like the GIANT island in the north that became a wasteland because of the Elits and houses a giant bunny. Or the two map squares that are completely empty. Even the weird Halloween Island.
Overall, a cute game! A little buggy, but very solid. I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys fetch-quests, farming, cooking, crafting, fishing, diving, and sailing. It is extremely relaxing with no time limit (aside from parts of the main story that requires you to sail and therefore can’t quick jump), so you can explore, or craft, or build, or whatever at your leisure. The mechanics work well, the hunger and stamina meters are fair. There’s a collection element, and there aren’t too many limits on building. Developers crammed lots of little details into the game and got many things right! Very enjoyable and I will always have fond memories of it. The 4ish stars out of 5 are for annoying back and forth running, lack of satisfactory ending, and all the glitch-bugs I kept running into even if they’re not game-breaking.
When trying to take a picture of a specific thing, make sure the green words pop up on the picture. If you don’t see the specific wording then it won’t count for either the quest or the Flamingo upload
Try to do all of the Wildlife survey picture upload quests as soon as possible to get improved recipes that actually help with life/stress/health replenishment
Start Route A quests first to get the Pan Flute to help go faster around the map.
Generally speaking, if the healthiness bar is lower than 50% her chance of ailment goes up. Same with the Hunger meter. When both are low, it increases your chance of ailment.
Be sure to do side quests that you can before hitting up main quests because some will no longer be doable if you don’t.
Getting money:
Upload pictures to Flamingo that are required and fit the hotwords for a steady stream
Sell things that you collect. Bugs sell for a lot in bulk and are easy to find. Mining materials make the most money.
Character Status
Naomi’s face picture shows her current stress level (very subtle and hard to tell unless up close). If this is too low, her charisma goes down and that drives shop prices up. Take a shower and groom at the mirror (or in a box as a cat). Drinking teas help with stress, too.
Healthiness is the bar below her face picture. Try to keep it above 50% to avoid getting ill. Salads and other foods that deliver Healthiness. Medicines improve it too.
Hunger is above the HP and Awakeness meters next to the stomach icon. Eat food to keep her full.
HP is the red squares next to the heart icon. Full heal is available at the doctor’s office or can be replenished by food or medicines
Awakeness are the green squares next to the eyeball icon. Drink Ded Bull to stay awake or eat certain foods or drinks. Go to sleep to replenish
Ailments
Cold: Playing in the rain with 50% or lower healthiness
Headache: Being too hungry and shrine warping long distances
Toothache: Being hungry and eating too many items (around 5 or 6)
Lumbago: Being hungry, unhealthy and lifting heavy objects
Alcoholism: Drinking too much alcohol. You need to drink A LOT. Drunkenness goes away on its own after a while, but alcoholism needs to be cured
The cat sprints faster and jumps higher than the dog but runs out of stamina quickly. It can also home in and kill small animals. Low defense.
The dog has better stamina and can fight, but much slower than the cat. Cannot jump high enough to get over many stone walls.
Sheep riding is faster and makes you impervious to badger or bee attacks. Can’t jump. Can’t pick up items while riding. Can’t take pictures while riding.
Make sure that you have the quest you want selected before doing the action. Most quests will not automatically count unless the quest itself is selected.
Fighting: really quite cumbersome in the game, but the easiest way is to attack the enemy with the dog, run away from it until it stops, then run back–> attack –> run away until it doesn’t follow –> repeat. Each enemy has an attack area limit. Otherwise, you’ll take tons of damage.
Fashioning clothes will help a lot with stats and allowing more backpack space.
For whatever reason, perhaps a glitch, I keep losing the money in my bank account in the game, so while the game recommends keeping your money in the bank just in case you die, I feel like you should keep most of it on your person. Every time I finish an urgent quest, I lose about 400 credits. This just makes it impossible to save up for anything in the game!
The MacCauley Kids:
Emma: On Sundays she’s at the church, Saturday she’s with her grandma
Clay: On Mondays she can be found in Town Hall, Thursdays
Charlotte: Friday next to the river to the East of town where there are 2 shrines. Next to the Southern Shrine. Tuesday

Route A – Onward to the Grungy Old Castle
Go towards the map marker
Route A – Three Trials

Route A – Trials Complete
Follow the marker to get back to the Sheep man
Route A – Classical Cosplay
Wool felt can be gotten from attacking sheep, gold nuggets from mining (buy pickaxe from knight man), glass beads are usually on rooftops (get as cat), liquid vitae is made from the witchdoctor lady. Put on dress and then get back to the Sheep Man.

Explore the area past the gate
Route A – A Knight’s Trials
Do all of the annoying sheep run trials. The time limit is extremely generous.
Route A – The Tale of the Bloodwoodes
Go to drawbridge and choose the correct portrait. It’s Macauley’s picture, the guy with the glasses.

Route A – A Tale of Yore
Talk to the ancestor peoples (check out all the food on the tables!).
Route A – Carry Those Barrels!
Get to the cellar. You only need to bring 3 barrels. The walking mechanism is terrible. Be careful not to run into the glowing sides or you will get hurt and eventually die. If you do, it’s not a big deal, just annoying.
Route A – Lord of the Booze: The DrinKING!
UUUUUGGGGGHHHH. Make sure you tap the arrows, try not to hold it. If/when they start giving you the drinking bottle aids, use them, they make the stupid balance bar longer. Do your best.

Main Quest – Route B –The Blind Veteran
Find him on the map

Get some Whiskey and Hot Coffee at the pub
Main Quest – Route B –Find the High-Tech Thingy!
Talk to Clay Macauley (Monday)
Talk to Charlotte Macauley (Friday)
Using the 2 pictures, find the location. Just follow the map to directly North of town and a cutscene with Emma starts. Memorize the scent from the Old Label, follow it to the Western part of the lake to a dog pee spot. Pee, then dig to find the item.
Go back to the pub and approach the bartender to start a cutscene
Main Quest – Route B – Back to the Northern Mountains
**NOTE: be sure to finish the quest Concerned Sister, Clueless Brother before finishing Route B quests otherwise it’ll be greyed out and undoable**
Get back up to Survival Guy and it starts a cutscene
Urgent Quest – Route B – Woman VS Mountain
Turn into a dog, make sure you scent him before you talk to him. Then you’ll have to “follow closely” as he runs through the snow. It’s a joke, because for whatever reason you can’t run quickly, and he’s always ahead of you. If you go the wrong direction, you have to start again from the last point you stopped. The last, long one, is impossible to follow him, so make sure to follow his scent and not veer too far off the path.
Main Quest – Route B – To the Mine!
It’s the mine! Reach the map marker for a cutscene
Main Quest – Route B – Into the Darkness
Tried to go back into the snowstorm to look for deer and stuff, but the story won’t let you, so in the mine we go. Memorize the Blind vet’s bandana and sniff your way through the mine. You can’t transform into human, and if you lose all your HP on the electric fences, you game over and have to do it all over again. Make sure you run before you jump over the electric fence. Or just use the cat.
Urgent Quest – Route B – The World’s Oldest Computer
Now to blow up the door. Make sure you clear the 3 cardboard boxes out of the way and then carry 3 boxes of dynamite. Thankfully, she runs at a decent speed and automatically places them on the ground. KABOOM. Yeeeaaah, Baby! Head to the Mother Brain. I took a picture of it. Insert the thing and answer the trivia question (if you were paying attention during the snowstorm thing)
Alfred
Then you get Weird Seed (JackandG0891) and it tells you to go plant it in the middle of Stonehenge
Someone’s been following you and you now follow the glowing footprints navigating around electric wires, through a door and into…cherry blossoms?
Main Quest – Route B – Out of Place Artifact
Free Camp, a shrine, and…WTH?? Stonehenge and UFO??? And that kid!?
You’re too fat, so plant the weird seed and pee on it
Change into a cat and climb that sucker
Mini-game dodge the chickens while running and catch the kid. If you get hit, you get hurt and have to do it again
Then it’s battle royale with David the Cat. The cat is impervious, so dodge until it hunkers down and charges. Dodge. The game will give a *dooop* sound when the cat is incapacitated. You have opportunity for 2 claw attacks.
Watch the cutscene
Main Quest – Route B – Blue Peacock: Epilogue
Talk to pubmaster, survival guy, the vicar, and his wife
Route C – The Heritage of Rudman White
Main Quest – Route C – The Heritage of Rudman White
Talk to the Town Hall poet lady and watch the cutscene. Get the 3 gnomes and run them to the White residence (left of town hall) BEFORE Elizabeth’s brother gets there (about 1600-1700 hours). Otherwise, you have to do it all over again. One is in the Asian scone lady’s backyard, another is in the yard right next to hers (across from the town hall), there’s one you have to get from behind the camera shop, there’s another right in front of the drive across the way from the White residence. I snapped a photo of the 3 gnomes when I was done, and it got decent likes on Flamingo.
Main Quest – Route C – To the White Residence!
Talk to the detective with the bird and heterochromatic eyes, then run to the right side of the house (as you face it), hop up onto the wall that runs perpendicular to the house, run and jump through the break in the fence. Proceed to the front and unlock the gate. Mr. White doesn’t seem to care much that you’re tresspassing
Main Quest – Route C – Weird Voice
Go to the left side of the house and talk to the camera guy. Go get the hot food and run it to him. It will cutscene automatically.
Main Quest – Route C – The Secret Royal Bloodline
Go to the Map Marker
Main Quest – Route C – To the Southern Lake!
Get to the map marker and watch the cutscene. Take a picture of the trees above the canvas (make sure you’re using a telephoto lens) sitting on the easel. Return to the detective.
Main Quest – Route C – To the White Residence Again!
Head to the map marker. Watch scene. Learn secrets.
Main Quest – Route C – Curtana, Blade of Legend
Get to the Kingswood gate (very far Southwest portion of the map). Turn into the dog and talk to the detective.
Urgent Quest – Route C – The Kingswood
Memorize Martha’s scent from the paintbox, then talk to the detective guy. Follow her scent, making sure not to veer off the path too far
Main Quest – Route C – What the Kingswood Guards
Make sure to power up the shrine, then continue forward in whatever form you desire (I decided to switch quickly over the A Bright Future quest for a bit and complete that before returning to the main quest).
Urgent Quest – Route C – Secret of the Kingswood
You can’t access items or turn into animals here you can only take pictures. Place the Jar on the star pedestal, the Garden Gnome on the Mushroom pedestal, the Antique Hourglass on the Wheel Pedestal, and then Wood (the wooden crate) on the Tree Pedestal. You’ll know you have the right item when it slides automatically to the center of the pedestal, and you can no longer “check” it.
Turn into a dog and pull the chain
Watch scene
Get Curtana
Urgent Quest – Route C – Curtana’s Desire
Approach the lake
Main Quest – Route C – Blade of Mercy: Epilogue
Visit the witchdoctor lady. Talk to the Berryman family

Head home and check email.
Shi**y Countryside Holiday
Do stuff until 1400 hours the next day when the science team arrives or just sleep it off.
Go to Town Square
Watch scene

Go talk to the scientist
Choose your next target
Wet Work: Sting
Take a picture of the scientist in Elizabeth’s wheelchair from the front
Go show it to Norlock
Redacted Report: Part 2
Return to the scientist
Wet Work: Dead Drop
**NOTE: You won’t be able to buy or eat anything from the townsfolk for a bit after doing the 3rd sabotaging quest so either stock up on things or make your own for a while. **
Wait until the town turns into animals (around the full or new moon). During the daytime, go talk to the Cafe guy who gives you 2 choices. I held onto mine, then read a few books to make it to nighttime. Go in front of the Macauley residence and a cutscene will start
End of the Line
Talk to all the townsfolk (or at least try to…)
The Glowing Moss Expert
Go to the Cafe to talk to Mushroom Guy
John’s Invention #65
Go find Camera Guy at his house…
..but he’s not there so go into the garage and check the spot
Watch the scene
World’s Worst Stream
A big story significant cutscene then launches
A mini-game of sorts starts where you have to aim the camera properly for 10 shots. You have to be sure to aim the finder on the white and red target for each image. Your reticule will turn green when you aim properly but be careful as they change every few seconds. If you mess up, then you get flattened by Hugh, the big goon, but it’s okay as you get to try again
Cutscene!
“LOBSTAAAAH!!!”
Epilogue
Cutscene
Debt paid off with 2 million monies leftover!!!
The Ultimate Decision
Now to choose an ending:
Ending A: Donate all my money to the town in order to keep its secrets well-protected
Completes The Rainy Woods Route.
There’s a celebratory cutscene where Naomi is made honorary citizen of Rainy Woods for her altruistic decision. All leftover occult gossip on social media regarding the Rainy Woods incident are snuffed out with the donated money to protect the secrets of the town. The scene ends with some creepy, mysterious music and a panoramic view of the town.
“Naomi ended up losing her status as a journalist due to the Rainy Woods incident, but thanks toa certain crafty someone at Morning Bell, she managed to get her Flamingo account back. At one moment, she’d gotten over three million followers… A far cry from what she’s got now, but it’s still more than enough for someone like her, right? Now she just needs to keep uploading photos so that steady stream of Emokes doesn’t dry up! With a little hard work, she might end up becoming yet another global influencer who lives in the middle of nowhere! I still believe in you, Naomi!”
Ending B: Run back to NYC and live out the rest of my life drowning in luxury
I don’t know what happens here because I didn’t choose it. Kind of wish I did, though.
Secrets of Rainy Woods: IMPOSSIBLE TO COMPLETE
Another cutscene.
…umm… E-El-Elizabeth?!?!?!?!?
“GODDAMMMMNN HELLLLHOOOOOLE!
You are now free to finish old quests and take on new ones!

Mnemosyne Has Forsaken Me (Rita Barrett)
Take a picture of the weathervane atop the Asian scone lady’s house (near the ATM and to the right of the cafe). Make sure you do it at night, though, because you need a “star.” Doesn’t matter if it’s cloudy, so long as it’s nighttime.
Bring it to the Town Hall Poet lady.
Humans Need Treatment Too (George Fakhoury)
Run around and do stuff in the rain with health less than 50% (better less than 20%) to get a cold
Bring the hunger meter to low and then teleport to and from the farthest shrine on the map (make sure to warp home with the map, otherwise you pay $10) to get a headache

Follow Virginia’s directions to go home and either take a shower or do makeup and get back to her.

Get the necessary materials (from the mine in the North, the mine in the Northeast towards the top right of the map, or the West mine near the edge of the map) and
Talk to McAvoy to remodel.
10 for the shack, or 250 for the nicer house.
Given that I was poor as heck, I still chose the expensive one and now I kind of wish I’d chosen the shack, lol.
Garden 2.0 (Douglas McAvoy)
Make sure you bring money so that he can change your garden layout
The True Face of the Angel of Death (Morris Downer)
Take pictures of the 2 first scarecrows as marked on the map

Innocent Animal Rhymes (Ian and Allen White)
Make sure you have the quest highlighted and then go kill the target animals (so far I’ve had hedgehog and red fox)
Can take job any time and it will be a random animal to kill each time.

In the late afternoons, go to the church and people will likely be there visiting a grave
More sheep than people? Seriously…? (email)
I found a place in the Northern Middle portion of the map where the sheep all gather on the grasslands around 1 single tree. NW of your house, just a little N of the camp site to the E of the mines and SW of the merchant selling meat.
There’s another group to the SW of town
Inhabitants of the Happiest Town in the World 1 (email)
Take pictures of everyone listed and upload them.
Hint: The Whites you have to do the beginning of the Rudman White quest first to open up the gates
David O’Reilly is usually way up north where you can’t get to unless you start the other main quest, but he’s in front of his house or near the church on weekends.
VIP Dish (Bruno Evans)
Talk to the mushroom cafe guy and he tells you where to look for the mushrooms. Then make sure your hunger meter is 0 and order the special mushroom dish
Rainy Woods Restaurant Alliance (Bruno Evans)
Make sure you have the telephoto lens. Stand far enough away that Macauley starts hunching over. Take a picture when the green words label the image properly. Bring it back to the cafe guy
The Cutest Inhabitant of Rainy Woods (John Berryman)
Take a picture of
ATM
Telephone Booth (from the house run straight in front of and past the general/clothes store and it is bright red next to the road. There’s also one in Town of Eccles)
Green Truck (Burley’s Farm)
The Witch’s Capsules (Pauline Atwood)
Capsule sheet is on top of 1977 (use cat), then she makes you find 1 rare butterfly wing, 2 rabbit furs (low rate drop from killing rabbits), and 3 sage.
The Witch’s Poultices (Pauline Atwood)
Follow the map marker to find the recipe, bring it back and then collect
Rare Butterfly Wings
Large Animal Femurs (found through peeing and then digging as the dog, generally in areas protected by badgers, but anywhere else, too)
Wrapping Leaf
The map will mark some areas to look, but I had to look all over the map for more femurs.
[Job] Local Food Culture Report, #1-4 (email)
All recipes provided via email. Make and take a picture, then post:
Mushy Hedgehog & Pumpkin Pie
Roast Duck with Peach Wine Sauce
Warm Red Fox and Radish Borscht
Red Deer Sunday Roast (Red deer are found either far North in snowy mountains or far South in Deargshaw Forest, Yorkshire pudding found in the town of Eccles on the Eastern part of the map at the shop, Asparagus found in shops in both Rainy Woods and Eccles)
The TerritoryMarkings of Rainy Woods, Parts 1-3 (Horatio Stringer)
As the dog, pee on 10, 20, 30, & 40 spots. Make sure to dig after you do as some items can only be found via digging.
Hints:
You can pee on waning scent spots and still have them count
You don’t need to have the quest equipped for it to count
Figure out who lost this! (David O’Reilly)
Follow the scent from the item screen and figure out who it is. Make sure you smell each green spot when you get to the end and the cutscene will start automatically when you smelled the end smell. This is random each time, not always the same person. You can likely do this indefinitely. I didn’t.
A Meaty Invention (Thomas Berryman)
Talk to Camera Guy’s Dad, the grocery owner. He gives you a 3-part cooking quest.
You need to secure at least 3 (I’d recommend more just in case, and then for making it later):
Suffolk mutton (sold at Burley’s Farm or the meat trader one of which is N of your house E of the mines)
potatoes
button mushrooms
beef
Yeatschan (Virginia Yeats)
Make sure the potted geranium is RED (just take it from the R side of the cafe) and find a striped deck chair

A Bright Future (Kevin the Tourist)
This quest came up after finishing Route A for me, but likely after finishing any Route. Talk to the tourist who is running around town square. The mini map shows you exactly where to stand for each photo which is nice, but the annoying part is that it doesn’t show you on the big map where you need to be.
Make sure each picture says “similar to old photo” then go back to Tourist to show him.
Old Photo 1: lower left part of map in Kingswood (must have finished Route C)
Old Photo 2: Smack in the middle of the snowy mountain (must have finished Route B)

Get a photo of 5 gnomes and a red flag. He doesn’t care if they’re dolls or gnomes, nor if the flag is a flag so long as it’s red and flutters.
I placed the 4 gnomes I saved from the previous quest and picked up one more from a spawn point in front of the red cloth on the clothesline found behind the house next to McAvoy’s place.
Return to William
Genius Creativty “The Recipe of a Genius” (William Dickens)
